Most of you might know Hanover because of the World Expo that was held in 2000 or the CeBIT, but Hanover has a lot more to offer: culture and history. As the capital of Lower Saxony with a population of 520,000 the city is a major center of northern Germany – a city that is known worldwide for hosting commercial expositions and the world’s largest Schützenfest (Marksmen’s Festival).

Furthermore, Hanover has a great regional importance because of the Leibniz University of Hanover, which is the second largest university of Lower Saxony with over 22 000 students. Hanover also hosts an international airport and the adventure zoo, which received the Park Scout Award for the third time in a row in 2008.
One of the most famous sights of Hanover is the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen – a baroque garden that also hosts the annual International Fireworks Competition.

The New Town Hall with the only working diagonal elevator in Germany, the Old Town as well as the Mile of Sculptures, where the world-famous Nanas of Niki de Saint-Phalle are located, are also well worth seeing.

With numerous churches, museums and theaters as well as the Maschsee Lake and the city forest Eilenride, which is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and the Campo Aktiv Arena, the largest sport and leisure facility in northern Germany, Hanover offers various ways of fun activities.

A huge role in the past, present and future of Hanover plays Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Besides the University, which is named after the German polymath, and the Leibniz House, where he lived from 1698 until his death in 1716, also the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library is notable. The historic Leibniz Letters, which are treasured at the library, are an UNESCO Worlds Heritage Site since 2007.

All this and a lot more make Hanover a great town – suitable for living, working, and studying.
We are looking forward to show you – during the Summer School 2009 – the different facets of our town Hanover!
